Why Coheed and Cambria Isn’t Emo

Started by Kyle Brady · 1 year ago

[this is in the same vein as “Why Slipknot Sucks”… someone asked me to say something about why Coheed and Cambria isn’t emo, and here it is]

“Reasons Why Coheed and Cambria Isn’t Emo”

(or, “I’d Slit The Throats of Babies For You, My Love”)

  • Emo is some crazy music to me.
  • Agreed.

  • You're reasoning is null and void. Coheed and Cambria's singing style is the most sickening whine I've ever heard, and that alone makes them Emo. That they are obviously more talented (I like their music, up until the singing starts) than typical Emo, and that they explore other genres is a non-issue. Is Death anything other than Death metal, if you consider their deviations into folk music, melodic metal and other forms of metal? The same idea applies to music from all genres: a band has a main sound, and thus they are that sound. If you disagree with this, then you must concede that 99% of bands are not "insert genre they are typed as here".
Anyway, open your mind, try listening to Ayreon if you want stories and beautiful fusions of styles, DJ Shadow or LTJ Nukem provide fantastic journeys of music, and try listening to the music that influenced the music that influenced your musical tastes, like a Black Sabbath fan discovering blues or a Led Zepplin fan discovering English Folk music.
    ...
Regardless of all this, and regardless of Coheed being, or not being, 'emo', the singers voice is awful, find me instrumental versions of every song and I'll be happy.
  • Thanks. I love it when there's a really insightful comment on here.

  • Well the singing is much like that of Geddy Lee. I tell people they're equivalent to the modern version of Rush. Some people just don't like it. I'd label Coheed & Cambria as progressive rock.
  • ihate emo and i hate coheed and cambria
  • Thanks for the wonderful insight, Hug0Alive.

  • Hey , i liked your article kind of.
But your forgeting to mention however the lyrics do sound emo, and its hard to say they dont but they are all based on the story of coheed and cambria. The amory wars.....
I love coheed to pieces my favorite band of all time =)
  • I dont think you need to follow up on bands influences to like them at all.. for instance, Coheeds biggest influence was the Misfits, and personally, the Misfits purely suck. The reason behind Coheeds greatness far outgrows their influences. Misfits were a repeatative one style band, with like 5 chorus' in each song, whereas in Claudio's words "I don't like to recycle" meaning, Chorus' are usually only played twice, and then go off into random new riffs that just seem to fit perfectly. And as far as his voice goes. I havent heard one shread of Whining in the music, whining is a motion of voice where it sound like you are crying, usually going from high, quickly dropping lower and veering off. Example. "I'm not ok, I'm not okaaaaayyyy" listen to it, thats whining. and if its the high voice that you think is whining, then listen to Prince, Terrance Trent D'Arby, even Michael Jackson, do you consider them to be 'whining'. i sure dont. Does Coheed and Cambria have talent? YES alot of it.
  • I'm not exactly sure what you were getting at here, because that's more or less what I was saying.

    But thanks for the feedback!

  • let me first say that coheed is my fav and no i dont think they are emo either. that being said i have a problem with this:
"If you’re emo, you like suicide, depression, and razor blades. As far as I know, they don’t like any of these either."
in the lyrics and implied story, the main character (claudio. story claudio not real life claudio sanchez) does have really bad depression and does contemplate suicide at certain points. mother superior - "your answer is in there, just stare down the barrel. your sincerest apologies wont write you out of this one. tonight you'll find the right in the pull of the trigger now bite."
and dont forget the suicide note to Newo Ikken: Junesong Provision- "Dear Newo Ikkin, how's Apollo been treating you? Has he been a good boy since the day I left? Give him my love and a sweet kiss for his head. Cause I won't be coming home, when you get this I'll be dead." and soon after his near attempt: Neverender - "point your gun in another direction now that you've cried yourself to sleep" thats enough for that although there is more.
whining vocals: in multiple songs - "what did i do to deserve?" lol
but lets get into this a little deeper. these instances of emo like lyrics have a place in a story that is definitely NOT emo. coheeds actual music is not emo and the lyrics cover an epic story line. to call them emo is to call anything story that has characters acting human emo. emo is a constant feeling of worthlessness and sadness. yes the story includes these two things at times but it essentially it is a story of becoming a hero to the worlds and rising up to the the biggest threat of everything. now with this responsability anyone will have their moments of doubt lol.
  • So are you agreeing with me?

I never said their lyrics couldn't be construed as emo on occasion, or the overall storyline even, but the band/music as a whole is not.

Even the "whining"... your example of "what did I do to deserve?" isn't whining to me, I would still call that "high pitched melodic singing". Whining is what Fall Out Boy does.

    --Kyle
  • you're a dick, people say they're emo because of their lyrics, it has nothing to do with their image, people say they're emo for the lyrics and soft vocals, and secondly you're a fuckhead for trying to justify them not being emo because you "never listen to emo ever" no one cares what you listen to and thirdly; of course who cares what people call them, i like them, you obviously do, don't give them a genre, it's rock music above all and it's good. So fuck off.
  • What an apt name for such a worthless human being.

    Thanks for playing.

    --Kyle
  • Metalheads need to get their head out of their asses, high voices don't equal emo you ignorant fucktards.
This band is most certainly not emo, Claudio is just not scared to write about shit that happens in real life(you know like death and human emotion, coheed has to murder his fucking children ffs), and I don't know about you but i've never heard them sing about their girlfriends leaving them and cutting themselves.I could give a fuck what the writer of this article's opinion is about not liking emo, but the truth is the mainstream is not very good at classifying music genres.(I could also give a fuck about people who don't like a band because their singer is unique, go jack off to your screamo and convince yourself it's real metal.)
  • a) Obviously you do care, because you took the time to rant about it.
    b) Do you know how to read? I was defending C&C as NOT emo.

    Way to go retard.

    --Kyle
  • I enjoyed your article. I hate the way some bands are never given a chance b/c society and the media says a band is "(insert your choice of genre here)". I wish we could rid music of genres and labels and just have "good music" and "shitty music".
  • Hey I agree.

But at the same time, alot of bands don't deserve to be heard by anyone, regardless of genre. Or sometimes even because they pigeonhole themselves into it.

You want to start making the the "shitty" list with me?

    Haha rock on Scotty brother

    --Kyle
  • I really couldn't agree more. And it pisses me off that they're fitted in with emo weenie bands such as MCR and all that. They are far from emo, and it's about time people knew it. >>
  • Pull the trigger and the nightmare stops.
